Roy Hodgson is expecting Fernando Torres to remain a Liverpool player but admits Javier Mascherano wishes to move away.

Reports the Argentina captain had asked for a transfer were confirmed at an Anfield press conference on Wednesday.

However, the Liverpool boss maintains that life for Mascherno will be no different to any other squad member unless a move is negotiated.

"He [Mascherano] wants to leave the club. He's made that perfectly clear," Hodgson said.

"I think he wanted to leave a year ago and he wants to leave now as well but he's contracted to Liverpool Football Club so if he leaves it will be our decision.

"But at the moment he is a Liverpool player and I will continue to treat him as a Liverpool player until such a day arrives when he no longer is. The mere fact that the player is a little bit unhappy with his situation and would prefer to leave does not necessarily mean that he will leave."

He added: "It disappoints me but it's not unusual. I think in every football club through the Premier League and throughout the world there will be players playing in the team who will want to leave. Some are allowed to, some are not so that's the situation with Mascherano.

"He's a Liverpool player with a two-year contract. I expect him to honour that contract until the day comes when the club decides to accept an offer for his services."

With regard to Fernando Torres who will return to Melwood next week Hodgson reported the World Cup winning striker was looking forward to rejoining club colleagues.

He said: "As far as I know he's looking forward to coming back here on Monday," he added.

"He's currently on holiday which is a well-deserved break. I don't think he's had one for three years so he's spending a lot of time with his family.

"He's keeping a very low profile and not really speaking to anybody but he has told us that he is looking forward to getting back to work and playing for Liverpool next season."
